Marina Mateos, Psychologist

Marina is a registered psychologist who thrives on helping people live well and improve their performance in sport and life. She completed a Master in Psychology (Counselling) at Swinburne University and a Master in Sport and Exercise Psychology at The Autonomous University of Barcelona (Spain).

Marina Mateos, Psychologist

Marina has extensive experience working in elite sports and the performing arts. Marina is a consultant psychologist for the AFL Players Association working with AFL players and ex-players and is the performance psychologist at the Melbourne Victory FC Academy. She is the psychologist for the ‘Northern Knights’, an Australian Rules Football club playing in the TAC Cup, an under-18 competition in Victoria. The competition is one of the primary sources of recruitment for AFL clubs from Victoria.

Marina also works at the Victorian Institute of Sport (VIS), assisting athletes navigate through the different stages of their athletic career (from junior to elite, de-selection/selection, adjustment after returning from events, injury, retirement), cultivate positive relationships with coaches and team mates and enhance their overall wellbeing and life balance using a holistic approach to being an athlete. Marina also specialises in assisting athletes improve their performance through the development of high performance skills (e.g. goal setting, pre-performance routines, arousal control).

Having worked at the Australian Ballet School, Marina really enjoys working with clients in the performing arts. She has also worked with comedians, musicians, actors and actresses and musical theatre. She can assist with overcoming performance anxiety, harness perfectionism, managing stress associated with the lifestyle and concerns about body shape, weight and eating.

Marina also provides general counselling for personal issues such as anxiety, depression, life transitions, relationships, and enjoys working with culturally and linguistically diverse clients. She works with both adults and adolescents and is trained in evidence-based models such as Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Mindfulness.

Marina is from Barcelona and therefore is fluent in Spanish and Catalan. She is an avid FC Barcelona football supporter, she loves an active lifestyle, reading, and enjoying great food in good company.
